In his tribute to the late illustrator Jack Unruh, David Courtney of Texas Monthly explains, “Jack Unruh was a big damn deal. Over the course of a long career, his artwork appeared in National Geographic, Time, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, GQ, Field & Stream, and Texas Monthly, among many other publications.”
He goes on to speak of the unusual relationship he had with the man who created over 100 illustrations for the magazine.
I too am a fan. You could spot Unruh’s distinctive style from across a river. He passed away in May of 2016 at age 80.

Jack was the best. I was an artist representative for him in the late 1990’s. He was not only an incredible illustrator – he was incredible to work with. I was seeking him out to see if he was still around – sorry to see he was gone in 2016. Would love to find another illustrator like him for a book I have written. RIP J.U.
